What information does Windows store in all those index.dat files?

index.dat files have been the topic of a great deal of discussion on the CleanUp! discussion list and many other discussion boards on the web. In particular there has been some concern about the fact that even after clearing the Internet Explorer cache and history, information still remains about web sites that have been visited. So, even though it would be reasonable to expect all your tracks to have been cleared by emptying the cache and clearing the history, this is not the case.

Note that while Internet Explorer does not erase this information, CleanUp! does, thereby further protecting your privacy.

If you are interested in further exploring the contents of your index.dat files to see the extent of the information stored about your surfing activities, then you can download and use the free utility Index Dat Spy - written by the same author as CleanUp!.
