What does the "Unexpected file format" message mean?

This means that the .dat file you are trying to open with Index Dat Spy is not of the format that Index Dat Spy supports.

There are at least a couple of reasons why this can happen:
  • Perhaps you are trying to open a .dat file that was created by some application other than Windows. These often have a name different to "index.dat". For example, some versions of Mozilla use a mozver.dat file and others. These are not supported by Index Dat Spy.
  • The index.dat file is of a "version" different to the one(s) Index Dat Spy supports.

Either way, it's nothing serious and don't worry not likely a problem with your machine. If you were to try and open something like a Word document with Index Dat Spy you'd get the same error. Smile
